Nasiha Active Citizenship Programme (ACP) was developed by a team working with Bradford Council for Mosques and the Islamic scholars locally and nationally. A seried of meeting and conferences in Yorkshire and Humber identified the need for young British Muslims to access clear and coherent Islamic teachings which can help them to understand their faith as citizens in modern day Britain. Nasiha ACP was borne out of this realisation.
The First Stage - Conceptualization: This involved preliminary discussions on how the citizenship concepts and themes should be delivered in the mosques and madrassahs. It was agreed that the resources would be Islamicallly enriched and follow the mosques and madrassah tradition of lesson delivery by always beginning with a verse of the Quran. A number of scholars were commissioned with researching Islamic traditions related to citizenship concepts, this exercise was primarily led by Mufti Hasan Raza, a linguist anf fiqh expert of international recognition.
The Second Stage - Drafting and Development of Nasiha ACP resources and materials: this included the collating of guidance notes from voluminous books in Arabic. Interpretation of Islamic sacred sources is only permissible for those qualified, so guidance notes from traditional experts was necessary to give support to teachers.
Final Stage: Consultation - Imams and community were consulted with various different drafts and materials were refined accordingly. Once completed the resources were succesfully piloted and delivered by Imams.
The first Nasiha ACP lesson developed was 'Oath of Peace' - this was as a result of a series of meetings in Bradford Council for Mosques which culminated in a unanimous agreement from Imams of all traditions of Islam that Muslims living as citizens in the UK are bound by a sacred duty to respect the laws of the State and to live peacefully.
MCB, Dr Bari: ‘They are professionally written and presentation is very good. Quotes and references from the Qur'an and Ahadith are relevant.‘
Shaykh Irfan Shah Musharafi, the natioanally acclaimed scholar in Bradford and descendent of the Prophet, peace be upon him, said in front of 25 Imams, that the Nasiha Citizenship Lessons ‘are a guidance and an essential tool to teach young Muslims about their responsibilities in the UK and how to become good citizens from an Islamic perspective.’
Mick Walker. Head of Citizenship and RE, ‘Nasiha lessons help teachers in mainstream schools to tackle difficult and sensitive subjects. They also provide a positive impression of how Islam can teach values of citizenship in Madrassahs which are similar to what is being taught in school.’
Usaid Zeb, student, ‘The best part of Nasiha Citizenship lessons are that they encourage you to debate in the lesson. The Quranic verses and hadith help us to understand that we should respect all communites...’
The New York Times: ‘One of the virtues of the curriculum in Bradford in applying Mr. Brown’s vision, according to his aides, is that it is taught by forward-leaning imams and is based on matching messages from the Koran to everyday life.'
BBC News Worldwide: ‘The tools Nasiha has put together shows "how their faith encourages them to work and participate within the fabric of British society". Lesson titles like Making a Positive Impression; Good Muslim, Good Citizen; and Community Work and Elections interweave teaching from the Koran with practical citizenship.'
